The Beginners Guide To Blogging – Making Money Online
Blogging is one of the most popular ways to start earning money online, so I have written the beginners guide to blogging to help those who want to get started.
There are already absolutely millions of different blogs online about a huge variety of different subjects, though that doesn’t mean that you cannot start your own blog today and eventually make it your main source of income.
But there are a number of things that you do need to consider if you are thinking about blogging as a way to make money.
Things To Know Before You Start
Gone are the days when you can think of a great original idea and then write several blog posts about it and instantly start making money. Blogging is definitely not the road that you should take if you want to make money literally overnight, as it just doesn’t work like that.
Some people do get lucky and start making money within the first few months of starting their blog, but they are generally few and far between and the amounts earned are not generally enough to pay the monthly bills.
If you decide that you want to start blogging to bring in some regular extra cash you have to realise that you are starting on a journey and there is a lot of work ahead of you.
It is not just a case of starting a new website and writing articles, you need to learn how to get traffic to your blog and learn how to use social media to your benefit. You need to develop a long-term plan of action that includes all the different tasks that you have to do and learn how to properly track your results along the way.
Saying that if you are prepared to spend hours doing working on your blog and related tasks, then blogging can be a really enjoyable way to build a residual income stream over time.
Choosing Your Topic
Before you even think about how to build a website or the name of your domain you need to decide on the topic or niche that you want to write about. There are a few things to think about when choosing your topic and they are:
- Do I want to write a lot of content about this subject?
- Do I know enough about it to write about different aspects of it?
- Will I be happy researching and learning more about it?
- Can I earn money from it?
When choosing your topic it is a good idea to choose one that you are passionate about or really interested in, so that you actually enjoy writing lots of different content about it.
You also need to consider if you have a wide enough range of knowledge about the subject to write about it consistently and if you don’t would you enjoy constantly learning about the different aspects of it.
Building up your own blog to earn money is a long journey and you could well be writing about your chosen subject for several years to come, so you really do want to love doing it.
I often write blogs for different clients on a wide range of subjects and believe me it is a lot harder work to write a series of blogs on a subject that you have absolutely no interest in whatsoever.
Last but by no means least you need to think about whether you can realistically earn money for the topic that you have chosen. Some niches such as making money online, travel and health and fitness are highly saturated with a lot of high authority competition, which means that they are really difficult for a newcomer to make an impact in them.
If you are determined to go into one of these niches then you will want to try to think of a small unique angle or mini-niche that you could target and do the research to look at whether you could make it work.
Who Is Your Target Audience?
When you have decided on your topic or niche you then need to think about exactly who you are going to be writing for. Are you targeting males or females, what age group are you looking at, do they live in a specific country, what are they really interested in.
It is worth creating a few mini profiles of the different people that you want to target with your blog and make a note of the different interests that they might have that are related to your topic. Look at the different types of products that these people might consider buying,
Once you have decided on your topic you will want to choose a name for your website and a domain name as well and you while you can initially start off with a free domain, it is a good idea to invest the small price for one that you will own.
Creating a website and blog has never been easier and WordPress is by far the best content management system to use. You can easily create your initial website framework in minutes and WordPress has a huge variety of themes, features and plug-ins to utlise when tailoring it to your needs.
Once you have created your website you will then want to customise it by choosing your a theme, deciding on the layout and uploading a header image. Make sure that the theme you choose is mobile responsive as that will be a main source of your traffic.
If you are looking for a free platform to get started on then the SiteRubix platform powered by Wealthy Affiliate is a great option to start with and there are also a number of free video based tutorials to help guide you through creating the website, all the initial framework and getting started on your journey.
How To Get Traffic
Once you have written and published some content you obviously want people to read it, so you will want to start learning about the different types of social media platforms that you could utilise.
Social media is a great way to target your chosen audience and get a constant flow of free traffic to your newly written posts. There are quite a few different platforms that you can use such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest to name just a few but I would concentrate on just learning about and using one or two to start.
You may also want to learn how to use search engine optimization, create a Sitemap and how to choose the correct keywords to include in your content so that your articles get well ranked among the search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.
Also, things like how to add ALT titles and tags and descriptive filenames for your images,.how to write a meta-title and meta-description for your posts play an important part of the SEO of your website.
Ways To Make Money
When it comes to making money from your blog you have a variety of options you can start off with Google Adsense or Affiliate Marketing is a very popular way of monetizing blogs as there are so many different options available. You can just Google your topic +affiliate marketing to see the different choices that you have.or take a look at similar blogs in your niche to see the types of things that they are promoting.
Another great way to earn money from your blog is to create your own e-books to sell and there are a number of different platforms online that you can use. Here is a great little tutorial from Hubspot that includes some free templates if you want to learn how.
Blogging can be a great way to make money online but you do have to face the fact that it is not going to pay all your bills in the short term. It is a long-term journey that you are embarking on so choose your topic wisely as you need to want and enjoy constantly researching and writing about it. Also, as I’ve said above writing the actual blogs is only a part of the process you will also want to learn all about SEO and social media marketing too.
That said if you are passionate about a subject and can share things about it that are useful and help other people you can build a successful business overtime that can result in you earning money even while you sleep!
