Getting ranked by Google is an ongoing battle for bloggers, so it is important that you optimize blog posts SEO to help your blog posts get seen. Not only that but you want to try to make your posts appealing as possible to help encourage your website visitors to not only read your post, but also look at your other content too.

Below I have listed some basic blogging and SEO tips that are really simple to follow even for new bloggers just starting out. If you are not already make sure that you include these whenever you are creating your new blogs, to help get them ranked well within the search engines and therefore found by your target audience, who will hopefully then keep coming back to see all your new updates.

Keyword Research

Before you even start to write your blog post there is an important step that you don’t want to miss out if you want your blog post to attract as many readers as possible.

As soon as you have an idea for your blog post you will then want to use a keyword tool so that you can research the keyword that you are gong to include within your title as well as a couple of times within the actual content.

As a new blogger you want to ideally aim for a keyword with a Search Volume (Traffic) of 100 or more and a QSR (Competition) of less than 50. Learn more about the importance of keyword research and how to get started here




Basic Seo Tips

Follow these basic tips to not only help your SEO and increase traffic to your site but also give your readers a better user experience when they land on your posts.

Title – Create an eye-catching title for you post that includes your keyword.

Keyword – Include your keyword within the first 160 characters of the first paragraph of your post.

Headings – Include H2 – H6 headings within your content to break your subject up into different sub-topics.

Content – Try to make you content conversational and make sure that you check it for grammar and spelling.

Word Count – Aim for at least 1,000 words post and more if you can – the more often you write the easier this will become.

Paragraphs – Break your content down into small bite sized paragraphs so that they are easy to read

Images – Include relevant optimized images within your post so that is not just a sea of words.

Alt Tags – Make sure that all your included images have appropriate alt tags.

Video – Embed a relevant video if you can – this can be yours or just one from You Tube – including a video not only keeps visitors on your page longer but Google owns YouTube so favours this.

Internal Links – Include at least one internal link that links to one of your other blog posts.

External Link – Within your post also include a relevant external link that leads to another website.

Encourage Comments – Within your last paragraph ask your readers to make a comment about your post and make sure that you reply to them. This is a great way to add new content to the initial post and therefore assists in ranking.

URL – Check that your URL is correct and that it includes your keyword.

Feature Image – Have you included a feature image for you post with a relevant alt tag

Category – Check the correct category that you want your post to be included in.

Meta Title – Ensure you have a captivating meta title of less than 60 characters and that it includes your keyword – it doesn’t have to be the same as your blog post title.

Meta Description – Write a captivating description that will show up under your title in the search engines that is 160 characters or fewer and includes your key word.

Share on Google+ – – Ensure you include your meta title and meta description plus a short personalised description after the URL.

Fetch as Google – Go to your Google Search Console and then go to Crawl and insert your URL then Fetch as Google and Request Indexing and Crawl This Page – this tells Google that you have a new blog post published.

Resubmit Your Sitemap – Within your Google Search Console go to Crawl and Sitemaps – then insert your sitemap and click the ‘Submit’ button. This encourages Google to take a look at your updated sitemap which will help with indexing of your post and the images within it.

Share On Other Social Media – Finally share your post on your social media platform along with the relevant hashtags if using Twitter or Pinterest. You may also want to create a specific image to pin on Pinterest and Canva.com is a great free tool that you can use to create both blog post and quote images.
